| The Event: Inaugural Annual Eddystone
Ultra Swim
A swim of approximately 11 miles from the Eddystone Lighthouse to Eddystone
Cafe on Tregonhawke Beach, Whitsand Bay. Starting at 12:00 on Monday 29th
August 2011.
This is a race as well as a challenge. The winner will be first to cross
the finishing line – no handicaps. There may be age bands if enough
people participate – open and over 65 men and women – 4 categories.
All participants will receive at least a certificate and for the 2012
event there will be at least a trophy, and dependant upon sponsors a cash
prize..
Eligibility criteria:
1. Over 18, or with parent / guardian consent and own escort boat.
2. Able to prove ability to swim in the sea the orderof distance of this
event (approximately 11 miles) – successfully completed another
comparable swim
Or
Complete the qualifying swim on 28th August 2011, from Eddystone Cafe
around the Scylla bouy and back to the cafe within the qualifying time
– to be set on the day according to conditions but in flat water
with no significant current around 90 minutes.
Entry Fee:
The event is designed as a personal challenge and a charity money raising
event. All entry fees, (minus unavoidable costs) will be donated to the
new Eddystone Charity – in the process of being set up. The objective
of the charity is to raise money for causes nominated and endorsed by
the trustees that give all money raised (without deduction of administration
and fund raiser payments) to the beneficiary. The trustees will have criteria
against which nominated good causes can be endorsed. The purpose of gaining
charity status is in order that the tax top up can be collected.
In 2011, there will be no entry fee and participants
will have the opportunity of raising money for their own nominated charity
and/or making a donation of their choice to the Eddystone Charity.
Participants will also have the opportunity of buying event printed rash
vests and tee shirts at cost only available to competitors.
Rules:
1. There must be an escort boat for every 5 competitors. Competitors can
arrange their own or contribute to the cost of an event organised boat.
Boat groups will be decided by predicted time for the course.
2. All swimmers must wear:
a. a full wet suit or other thermal protection with prior agreement of
the safety officer
b. goggles or a face mask.
No fins or paddles. Boots, gloves and hoods are allowed
c. a high visibility hat for identification and spotting
3. Food and drink supplied by each swimmer will be carried on their escort
boat.
4. All swimmers must sign an indemnity form taking full responsibility
for their own safety and survival whether they provide their own escort
or use one provided by the organisers. There is no insurance for
this event and the organisers take no responsibility for the
survival of the competitors.
